Portage Lake Canal Closure

Posted on May 6, 2010

What: Canal CLOSURE

When: Monday, May 10, 2010

Where: Portage Lake Canal at Dexter-Pinckney Road, Dexter Twp

Why: Bridge Replacement Project

Background

The Washtenaw County Road Commission and Dan’s Excavating, Inc. have scheduled the CLOSURE of the Portage Lake Canal at Dexter-Pinckney Road, located between Portage Lake and Little Portage Lake in Section 2 of Dexter Township, beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, May 10, 2010.  This waterway closure will facilitate the demolition of the existing bridge.

Every effort will be made to reopen the canal as soon as safely possible.  However, due to the significant size and heavy deterioration of the existing bridge, a measured approach to the structure demolition must be taken.  This process is being coordinated with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The canal closure is expected to be in place until the end of the work day on Friday, May 21, 2010.  The canal may be temporarily reopened during the weekend of May 15-16; however, this weekend reopening will only be permitted if conditions are safe for boat traffic.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Boating / Marine Safety Division has been advised of the canal closure.  The Washtenaw County Road Commission and Dan’s Excavating, Inc. thank area boating enthusiasts in advance for your patience as we undertake this phase of the bridge replacement project.
