Waters Road Short-Span Bridge

General Information

The old Waters Road Short-Span Bridge over Haas Drain (circa 1950s) is located in Sections 1 and 12 of Freedom Township, between Parker Road and Haab Road. The bridge was closed by the Washtenaw County Road Commission on July 10, 2007, due to the severe deterioration and failure of the beams.  Its replacement was completed by the Operations Department on December 21, 2007.  (read more)

Background

This short-span bridge on Waters Road was officially CLOSED by the  Washtenaw County Road Commission on July 10, 2007, following a routine bridge inspection that revealed severe deterioration.

In 1999, after a routine inspection, the structure maintained a "no posting" status.  In 2005, after the inspection, the Waters Road Short-Span Bridge was reduced from "no posting" to 10 tons. In 2007, for the safety of the motoring public, following the biennial inspection, the structure was closed due to failure of the beams. (Read more about this bridge closure)


Project Updates

Update as of December 21, 2007

The Washtenaw County Road Commission announced the Waters Road Bridge replacement project was completed, and the road was officially REOPENED to the motoring public by 10:15 a.m. on Friday, December 21, 2007. Read more about the completion of this project.

Update as of December 9, 2007

The concrete jacket was installed for the east abutment and the new timber bridge was assembled and partially installed. The bridge and road remains closed pending installation of a concrete wing wall, completion of the bridge, installation of guardrail and signs, and construction of the road approaches to the bridge. This work is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, weather permitting.

Update as of November 27, 2007

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the Washtenaw County Drain Commission (WCDC) permits have been approved and the design has been completed.  Upon receipt of construction materials, the Road Commission Operations crew will begin repairing this bridge.  It is expected that the bridge will be reopened to traffic by the end of December 2007, weather permitting.

Update as of October 29, 2007

A specially-treated timber deck has been ordered and is being fabricated by the Krenn Bridge Company, out of Vicksburg, Michigan. Details of the bridge replacement and design are being discussed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).  Delivery of the deck is expected by mid-November, and a Road Commission Operations crew will complete the installation as soon as possible thereafter, upon final approval from MDEQ.

A material quote for a superstructure replacement has been requested by the Road Commission.
