Background:
The
Feldkamp Road Bridge is located between Michigan Avenue (US-12) and Klager Road in Section 17 of Saline Township.
On May 9,2008 the road commission imposed the closure of the
Feldkamp Road Bridge following the completion of a routine, annual bridge
inspection. The inspection revealed severe deterioration and
structural failure of the bridge beams and abutments. The bridge
inspector recommended that the Road Commission impose an immediate
closure of the structure for the safety of the motoring public.
The Road Commission completed repairs to
the bridge and abutments in December 2008, allowing the reopening of the bridge,
which is now subject to a 7-ton weight restriction.

The WCRC designed the temporary repairs to be completed for this bridge. A contractor was hired to repair the south abutment by placing concrete around the base of the foundation, which filled the voids under the abutment and further protected it from scour. The WCRC repaired the beam ends at the south abutment by adding steel plates to the bearing locations. The bridge is expected to reopen today with a 7-ton weight restriction posting.
